Les armoiries et décorations de la ville de Reims

The city’s coat of arms, which dates back to the 15th century, is made up of a bay laurel wreath, a fleur-de-lys motif, and a crown shaped like ramparts. It bears the city’s motto: ‘Dieu en soit garde’ (God, protect us). The embattled crown was gifted by Napoleon I and symbolises the sieges withheld by the city.

The three decorations hanging under the coat of arms are the Cross of the Knight of the Legion of Honour, awarded to soldiers, and the First World War Cross with a commendation to the Order of the Army. Both were gifted to the city on 4 July 1919 by French President Raymond Poincaré. They are complemented by the Second World War Cross.

Das auf das 15. Jh. zurückgehende Stadtwappen zieren „in Silber unter mit zahllosen goldenen Lilien besätem blauen Schildhaupt zwei grüne Zweige“. Darunter ist der Wahlspruch von Reims zu lesen: „Gott schütze sie“. Die durch Napoleon I. gewährte Zinnenkrone symbolisiert die Belagerungen, denen die Stadt standhalten musste.

Die drei unter dem Wappenschild hängenden Auszeichnungen sind zunächst das Ritterkreuz der Ehrenlegion als militärische Auszeichnung und das Kriegskreuz 1914-1918 mit Erwähnung im Armeebericht. Beide wurden der Stadt am 4. Juli 1919 vom französischen Staatspräsidenten Raymond Poincaré verliehen. Sie werden durch das Kriegskreuz 1939-1945 ergänzt.
